Man Shot by Pistol Thrown in the Trash

WICHITA, Kan. Apr 4, 2007 (AP)— A Wichita man is recovering from a gunshot wound to the hand from a pistol that was thrown in the trash, sheriff's officials said.

The 42-year-old man, who was not identified, was helping unload trash Tuesday and accidentally hit the trigger of a discarded short-barreled pistol, wounding his left hand, said Sedgwick County sheriff's Capt. Mike Oliver.

Oliver said witnesses heard the pop and saw the man with blood on his hand at a Wichita trash transfer station Tuesday morning.

The gun was loose in the trash and covered with mud.

Investigators want to know why it had been thrown away and said it wasn't immediately clear if the gun was used in a crime.
